RETURN stars Linda Cardellini (Kelli), Michael Shannon (Mike), John Slattery (Bud), Talia Balsam (Julie), Bonnie Swencionis (Cara Lee), Emma Rayne Lyle (Jackie) and Paul Sparks (Ed).

“I like Johnson’s delicacy and discretion. She trusts Cardellini’s natural, easygoing performance to show us what goes untold. The movie is modest, too, and its small emotional scale works. Without asking for pity or outrage, it’s another movie about the unaccountable, unending drain of war.”
Wesley Morris, Boston Globe

“RETURN, starring Linda Cardellini, is a haunting new movie that tweaks and twists the familiar of subject of a soldier’s return from war.”
-John Sanchez, Huffington Post

Linda Cardellini stars in Liza Johnson’s RETURN

“A low-key drama that articulates the ennui of a returning servicewoman after a tour in the Middle East, Liza Johnson’s RETURN strikes a delicate balance between familial melodrama and suffering vet pic…it features a striking performance by Linda Cardellini, once the most sly and attractive of the awkward high schoolers on Freaks and Geeks, and now a fully mature screen actress making the most of her copious talents.”
-Brandon Harris, Filmmaker Magazine

“In this stratum of Middle American society during wartime and hardship, the movie suggests, life is tough and challenging. You admire these characters for their considerable resilience while understanding that even the best-intentioned people can break under the stress.”

MFF Film Alums THE DISH AND THE SPOON and RETURN Reviewed Favorably in The New York Times

Greta Gerwig and Olly Alexander in THE DISH AND THE SPOON

You may recall seeing Alison Bagnall‘s film, THE DISH AND THE  SPOON, at last year’s Maryland Film Festival.

Shot in and around the resort town of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, THE DISH AND THE SPOON tells the story of the romance that blossoms between Rose (Greta Gerwig), a young woman who has recently discovered that her husband is cheating on her, and a young British man (Olly Alexander), only identified as “Boy,” who is adrift in the U.S. after having crossed the Atlantic to pursue a romance that didn’t pan out.  This film was favorably reviewed in yesterday’s  The New York Times.

Liza Johnson's first feature-length film, RETURN

Liza Johnson‘s first feature-length film, RETURN, which we supported in script stage with a MD Filmmakers Fellowship, was also nicely reviewed in The New York Times.

RETURN is about an American reservist, wife and mother (played by Linda Cardellini) returning home from her tour of duty in the Middle East, and also stars, Michael Shannon and John Slattery. It also received good reviews at its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival Director’s Fortnight.
