god-loves-uganda-poster-LR-smallThe MFF/WYPR Spotlight Series returns on Tuesday 9/24 with a special screening of Academy Award-winning filmmaker and MFF alum Roger Ross Williams‘ GOD LOVES UGANDA at the MICA Brown Center at 7:00pm. Williams’ documentary short MUSIC BY PRUDENCE was screened within MFF 2010.

Following the screening of GOD LOVES UGANDA there will be a 10-minute interview between WYPR’s Tom Hall and Roger Ross Williams, followed by Q & A with the audience.   Click here for podcasts of past Spotlight Series interviews.

The feature-length documentary GOD LOVES UGANDA is a powerful exploration of the evangelical campaign to change African culture with values imported from America’s Christian Right.

The film follows American and Ugandan religious leaders fighting “sexual immorality” and missionaries trying to convince Ugandans to follow Biblical law.

GOD LOVES UGANDA premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 18th, 2013 and has won numerous awards at film festivals so far. The film serves as a catalyst for change, through our upcoming international screening tour and social action campaign.

Sragow Profiles Local and Nation Oscar Noms

Nice piece by Michael Sragow in Wednesday’s Sun exploring some local links to the recent Oscar nominees

Sragow,  one of the best film writers in the country, explores one of the documentary short nominees, MUSIC BY PRUDENCE, produced and co-edited by MICA’s Patrick Wright. Patrick’s been such a great partner with us on the film series’ we’ve done at MICA, often including special sessions in the classroom with the students and visiting filmmakers. He’s put together a pretty great film program for MICA students. I haven’t seen his finished film, but early scenes I saw were unbelievable, and it’s been fun watching the project grow. MICA has been supportive from the beginning. I don’t know any of the other nominees, but I hope this one wins.

No news flash: Jeff Bridges is going to win the Oscar for Best Actor. It will act as a Lifetime Achievement Award and, on that basis, is richly deserved. If you want to see him deliver a really fresh performance of a man struggling with self-destructive impulses, rent AMERICAN HEART. Bridges plays a reluctant father to Edward Furlong (discovered by Jim Cameron for TERMINATOR), and he’s just great.

MFF 2009 Closing Night: THE HURT LOCKER

Screenwriter Mark Boal, Director Kathryn Bigelow,  & Washington Post Film Critic Ann Hornaday

Unbelievably, defying all odds, MFF 2009 Closing Night film, THE HURT LOCKER, was nominated for NINE (!!!!!!)  Oscars, sharing the Most Nominated title with the Biggest Movie in History, James Cameron’s AVATAR. THE HURT LOCKER was nominated in many major categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, etc. If Kathryn wins Best Director she will be the first female director to do so. She’s already broken one glass (titanium ?) ceiling- she’s the first female to win the Directors Guild Best Director, which is a pretty good predictor of Oscar favor.


Also, MICA professor and MFF Alum Patrick Wright’s new film,  MUSIC BY PRUDENCE, for which he produced and edited was the co-producer and  assistant editor, was nominated in the Best Documentary Short Category. Maybe, like KING GIMP, he’ll bring another Oscar back to Baltimore in this category.

Other Bmore related Oscars: Anna Kendrick, nominated for Best Supporting Actress was at our event for CAMP, and is the female lead of ROCKET SCIENCE, a filmed in Baltimore movie that was MFF 2007 Closing Night. She’s up against another Marylander, Mo’Nique.
