Sunday at Sundance

It’s hard to describe the thrill of seeing Tanya Hamilton’s NIGHT CATCHES US premiere here in competition last night. We supported this script through the Maryland Filmmakers Fellowship (when it was called STRINGBEAN AND MARCUS) and it is quintessential independent film making- made for little money and bringing a previously unexplored world to the screen. Tanya was fascinated by the dynamic of people growing up and dealing with a radical past. The two key characters, played by Kerry Washington (RAY)  and Anthony Mackie (THE HURT LOCKER) are former Philadelphia Black Panthers and that specific history infuses everything. I sat with celebrated film critic, Elvis Mitchell (who moderated the open conversation with directors Barry Levinson, David Simon and John Waters at our MFF fundraiser) and we’re both eager for this to get to audiences. – Jed
