Next Gunky’s Basement: Jim Jarmusch’s DEAD MAN on 3/6!

DEAD MAN poster

Featuring an original screenprinted poster by Justin Lucas! Get yours for just $5 at the show!

Gunky’s Basement, the Maryland Film Festival series curated and hosted by Dan Deacon + Jimmy Joe Roche, continues with a rare 35mm screening of Jim Jarmusch‘s DEAD MAN!

Starring Johnny Depp as William Blake and Gary Farmer as Nobody, and featuring a stunningly stark soundtrack by Neil Young, DEAD MAN (1995) was a dramatic departure for director Jarmusch from the deadpan indie comedies Stranger Than Paradise and Mystery Train into the realm of “psychedelic western.”

DEAD MAN’s phenomenal supporting cast includes Crispin Glover, Iggy Pop, Gabriel Byrne, Billy Bob Thornton, and, in his last significant role, Robert Mitchum. Boasting gorgeous cinematography from Robby Müller (Paris, Texas; To Live and Die in LA; Breaking the Waves; Repo Man) DEAD MAN is a landmark film of the 1990s–and probably hasn’t screened on film in Baltimore since its initial release 18 years ago!

As always with Gunky’s Basement, it’s a 35mm print for just $5 and FREE for Friends of the Festival!  The film screens at 9pm at the Charles Theater on Wednesday 3/6.

Also featuring an original screenprinted poster created for the evening by Baltimore artist Justin Lucas!

This irreverent, modern-classic dark comedy is set in the punk wasteland of mid-80s LA, stars Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton, and boasts a soundtrack that includes Iggy Pop, Circle Jerks, and Black Flag.

Don’t miss this rare 35mm screening of this indescribably unique 1984 film! Again, it’s just $5 for a 35mm print, hosted by musician Dan Deacon and artist Jimmy Joe Roche.

Roger Ebert said of REPO MAN, “Repo Man comes out of left field, has no big stars, didn’t cost much, takes chances, dares to be unconventional, is funny, and works. There is a lesson here.” Read his full review, originally published in January of 1984, here:

Announcing: GUNKY’S BASEMENT with Dan Deacon and Jimmy Joe Roche!

Original silkscreened poster by Baltimore artist, Chris Day

GUNKY’S BASEMENT  is an exciting new Maryland Film Festival project: a series of 5 genre films curated and hosted by two Baltimoreans, musician DAN DEACON and artist/filmmaker JIMMY JOE ROCHE. While the programming is free-form, the emphasis will be on Dan and Jimmy’s favorite sci-fi, horror, and action films of the late 70s through the early 90s. Dan and Jimmy will introduce all the films, which will screen from 35mm prints on the largest screen at the Charles Theatre, with informal conversations following the film. Each screening will also have an original screenprinted poster created by a Baltimore-based artist.

The first film in Gunky’s Basement has just been announced, and will take place at the Charles on Thursday October 21st at 9pm: John Carpenter’s THE THING. THE THING is a startling combination of science-fiction and horror from one of the true masters of both genres; seeing it on the big screen is the perfect way to see in the Halloween season!

We’ll be announcing ticket sales for THE THING soon, as well as the dates and titles for the next two Gunky’s Basement screenings; stay tuned!
