COMING SOON: MFF 2009 Alum DAYTIME DRINKING to Open at The Charles Theatre!

Don’t miss the limited engagement at The Charles Theatre of DAYTIME Daytime DrinkingDRINKING, one of the sold-out features in MFF 2009’s new foreign film program, and a City Paper Critic’s pick.

DAYTIME DRINKING opens at The Charles on Friday, August 7th.

More on DAYTIME DRINKING from the Maryland Film Festival website:

The explosion of new, exciting South Korean voices on film continues with Daytime Drinking, a crowd-pleasing deadpan comedy with dark edges that has much in common with the best American independent comedies of the last several decades.

When hapless Hyuk-jin gets dumped by his girlfriend, his friends make drunken plans to cheer him up with a trip to a distant resort. But when he arrives at the destination during its cold, dreary off-season, none of his friends have arrived — the first of many things to go wrong in this smart, hip comedy. Soon, Hyuk-jin begins to meet other people in his strange new surroundings — and while not all of them can be trusted, they all have one thing in common: they know how to drink.

A surprise hit at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival, Daytime Drinking is a remarkably assured first feature from Noh Young-seok. Comparisons can be made to such “small” comedies as Steve Buscemi’s Trees Lounge and Bong Joon-ho’s Barking Dogs Never Bite. It’s a foreign film that’s artful without being “arty”; if you’re looking to laugh, look no further than this well-written, infectious film.
This is the first feature film by Seoul-born director Noh Young-seok.

DAYTIME DRINKING appeared at the 2009 Maryland Film Festival as part of our Filmmaker Advocacy Program, supported in part by The Andy Warhol Foundation.

The Superkiiids! (stars of LIGHTNING SALAD MOVING PICTURE) to Perform at the Tent Village during MFF 2009!!!

FRIDAY, MAY 8, 7:30pmĀ  Lightning Salad Moving Picture
TENT VILLAGE, MFF 2009

DON’T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE STARS OF MFF 2009 SELECTION LIGHTNING SALAD MOVING PICTURE PERFORM THEIR UNIQUE COMEDY IMPROV!

From The Superkiiids! Website:

We are the Superkiiids! You are the Superkiiids!

We: Employed by an icky-sticky-jazz (a good thing) based philosophy where no two shows are exactly alike, an endless number of i’s between the k and the d (but at least three!) and the notion that the audience is just as much a Superkiiid! as The Superkiiids! themselves, The Superkiiids! have thus created a two-man-hyper-audience-involved-folk-live-entertainment-hyphen-loving-force-of-nature!

More about LIGHTNING SALAD MOVING PICTURE from the MFF Website:

“We drew a lot of inspiration from the creative party music coming out of Baltimore with the likes of Dan Deacon, Girl Talk and Future Islands (who contributed some music to the film). We wanted the film to first and foremost be fun and entertaining-the same feeling we got listening to that kind of music.”
— director Kenneth Price (The Third Kiiid!)

The Superkiiids! are two young men who live and play together in an attic, and receive daily directive video messages from “Zemeckis”; this morning, they’re charged with making the movie Back to the Future 4 –with the warning that if they fail, “Zemeckis” is going to give the project to “Hanks.” Setting out on their movie-making mission, but constantly getting side-tracked, they encounter time travel, romance, a colorful cast of characters, and one of the longest slip-n-slide story devices ever committed to cinema.
