TIFF 2012: Second Report From the MFF Programming Team

Athina Rachel Tsangari, producer of DOGTOOTH (MFF 2010) and director of ATTENBERG (MFF 2012), presents her new short film THE CAPSULE.

Each Toronto International Film Festival offers not just a vast number of titles, but such a staggering variety in tone, genre, budget, and country of origin, that it’s very possible for each audience member to have a strikingly different experience. While MFF’s programming team will have covered approximately 80-100 different new feature films when all’s said and done, that number represents about one third of everything offered at TIFF; it would be literally impossible for any one festival-goer to see more than a sixth of the films screening at TIFF.

As the festival reaches its midpoint, a lot of the audience buzz surrounds high-profile forthcoming films such as the era-hopping, literature-rooted epic CLOUD ATLAS and Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER. Our interest in TIFF is a bit different.

While we certainly take in some films whose release schedule is imminent and known (see AMOUR, below), our primary concern is smaller films from less established international voices whose films may not yet have a U.S. distributor, yet alone a release plan. These are the films that are most likely to hit us with a genuine sense of discovery. Pragmatically speaking, these are also films that may still be fresh and emerging in the marketplace come Maryland Film Festival 2013.

To put it another way, for every Haneke or Winterbottom on our TIFF itinerary, we dive in with two or three tickets that are unknown quantities, eager for that next discovery—and as eager as the rest of you to catch THE MASTER in 70mm when we get back to Baltimore.

Here are a few more films that have stood out to our programmers as TIFF 2012 passes its midpoint:

AMOUR — Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the latest from Michael Haneke (Funny Games, The White Ribbon) is an elegant, heart-wrenching account of an elderly couple living out their final days in their Paris apartment. Jean-Louis Trintignant (The Conformist, Three Colors: Red) and Emmanuelle Riva (Hiroshima, Mon Amour) give stunning performances, accompanied by an excellent-as-ever Isabelle Huppert as their increasingly concerned daughter. Haneke’s films are never easy to watch, and despite the relatively restrained subject matter this one is no exception—but if you’re ready for a tough film with a gentle core, AMOUR should not be missed. All indicators are this will (deservedly) be one of the big foreign films of the forthcoming season.  Close MFF followers, BTW, may notice many narrative and thematic similarities to a small, excellent Icelandic film we screened within MFF 2012, Rúnar Rúnarsson‘s VOLCANO.

WATCHTOWER — This Turkish drama boasts a unique setting, as a loner eager to escape his past takes a position as a watchman in a mountainous wooded area, his only contact with the outside world is the CB radio on which he’s to report any fires or other disturbances. Down the mountain, a young woman works as a rest-stop cook, harboring a very personal secret. Pelin Esmer has endowed her characters with rich back-stories and multifaceted personalities slowly unveiled, delivering just the kind of international gem that one might never come across without festivals like TIFF.

3 (aka TRES)—Pablo Stoll Ward also delivers such a gem with this rich character drama from Uruguay by way of Mike Leigh. A soccer-crazed dentist attempts to reconnect with his estranged ex through their mutual care of their teenaged daughter – a smart, hip teenager who’s becoming a bit of a wild child—but his ex may have moved on.  It’s a small epic, if you will, made up of dozens of little moments that feel incredibly large and real.

SPRING BREAKERS — As with all his prior work, the latest from young provocateur Harmony Korine (writer of KIDS and director of love-em-or-hate-em titles such as GUMMO and TRASH HUMPERS) isn’t for everyone. And even if he’s seemingly working with more polish and some name actors here, he’s still pushing buttons that some will find irritating, obnoxious, and/or offensive. But we generally enjoy having those buttons pushed, and found a lot to love here. This film has an unforgettable performance from James Franco as a particularly perverse Florida drug dealer, and Korine’s film would pair well with Herzog’s equally lurid, over-the-top, and self-satirizing Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.

EVERYDAY – Prolific British director Michael Winterbottom‘s impressive new drama chronicles a young family’s struggles during a five-year period in which the father is sentenced to prison. The film was itself shot over a five-year period to allow the actors (particularly the adolescents) to age naturally and in time with the story, while becoming closer on and off screen. This technique ultimately lends a greater sense of realism to the work, resulting in a deeply moving film.

ALL THAT MATTERS IS PAST – A tense psychological thriller/dark family drama from one of Norway’s most celebrated young filmmakers, Sara Johnsen, that explores a lifelong jealousy between two brothers over a girl who has remained the object of their affection since childhood.

Festival Programming Highlights #2: ATTENBERG and THE PATRON SAINTS

Each day leading up to the festival, director of programming Eric Hatch is highlighting a pair of titles in our line-up for your consideration.

ATTENBERG – One of the biggest surprise hits in MFF history was 2010’s Greek dark comedy DOGTOOTH, which went on to an Academy Award nomination for best foreign picture and had one of its best theatrical runs in the country right here in Baltimore. Much of that team (including DOGTOOTH director Yorgos Lanthimos, who co-stars here) is back for Athina Rachel Tsangari’s ATTENBERG, an appropriately offbeat drama about a woman with a lot of distance between herself and “normal” social behavior. As she sits with her dying father, trading philosophies and plotting to fulfill his dying wish, she begins to reconsider the ways she’s approached friendship and romance. Citing inspirations as quirky as Monty Python and nature documentaries, we think we detect some notes of early Fassbinder here as well.

THE PATRON SAINTS gives us a poignant look into the daily lives of residents of a home for the aged and disabled.

THE PATRON SAINTS – This one won’t be for everyone, but many of you will absolutely love it; it’s unquestionably among the very best and most provocative two or three films I saw at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival in 2011—and I watched 30 movies there, so that’s saying something. A documentary that looks at residents of a nursing home—most, but not all, elderly—the film becomes an essay of sorts on the human mind, and the strange, wonderful, horrible things that it produces when it’s in an unfettered and compromised state. It’s a sad and unnerving film at moments, humorous at others, but with a very compassionate tone running underneath it all from start to finish. The directing duo behind this film have had a busy year, and will also be presenting FRANCINE, their brand new Melissa Leo-starring drama, for a single screening within MFF 2012.

LUV, GAYBY, THE COMEDY, and 9 More Announced for Maryland Film Festival 2012!

Following up on last week’s first line-up announcement, the Maryland Film Festival proudly announces twelve more features for MFF 2012 (May 3-6 in downtown Baltimore).

Among these titles are LUV, the Baltimore-shot drama which premiered at Sundance 2012 and boasts an all-star cast that includes Common, Charles S. Dutton, Danny Glover, and Michael Kenneth Williams; GAYBY, fresh from its premiere at SXSW 2012, a warm-hearted comedy about two best friends, a gay man and straight woman, who decide to have a child together; and THE COMEDY, a dark and challenging mix of comedy and drama starring Tim Heidecker.

As with every year, the MFF 2012 full line-up will include 40+ new feature films and 75+ new shorts from around the world, as well as a vintage 3-D filma silent film with live music by Alloy Orchestra, and a favorite film selected by legendary filmmaker and MFF board member John Waters.

All U.S.-made feature films will be presented by their filmmakers.

Without further ado, the second batch of features announced for MFF 2012 are:

ATTENBERG (Athina Rachel Tsangari)
A young woman with a bizarre way of looking at friendship, love, and life spends long hours with her father, their small town’s chief architect now on his deathbed. DOGTOOTH fans take note: ATTENBERG is directed by that film’s associate producer, co-stars that film’s director Yorgos Lanthimos, and has an offbeat sensibility that, while all its own, can only have DOGTOOTH as its closest point of comparison.

THE COMEDY (Rick Alverson)
Tim Heidecker stars in this abrasive, challenging, and yes, hilarious film, arguably closer in tone to FROWNLAND or THE IDIOTS than it is TIM AND ERIC’S BILLION-DOLLAR MOVIE. A group of jaded, ultra-privileged Brooklynites with sharp comedic tongues and little respect for social norms seeks out confrontational situations, with sometimes shocking results.

EMPIRE BUILDER (Kris Swanberg)
A young mother (Kate Lyn Sheil, also of MFF 2012 titles SUN DON’T SHINE and THE COMEDY) seeks a rural retreat from the doldrums of married life. The second feature film from Kris Swanberg (MFF 2009’s It was great, but I was ready to come home).

FOUND MEMORIES (Júlia Murat)
In this stunningly shot drama from Brazil, a young female photographer sets out on a hike and stumbles upon a mysterious village populated entirely by elders. Her well-intentioned presence there disrupts the flow of their daily rituals, causing them to contemplate their mortality and look at life differently.

GAYBY (Jonathan Lisecki)
Warm-hearted, often explosive humor and vibrant characters drive this crossover comedy about best friends—a gay man and a straight woman—who in their 30s decide to make good on their promise they made back in college to have a child together.

KID-THING (David and Nathan Zellner)
This beautifully shot feature from the directors of GOLIATH (MFF 2008) shows us a slice of Texas populated by listless moments, odd behavior, and piles of pop-culture debris – all seen through the eyes of a mischievous 10-year-old girl who, through solitude, has developed a unique outlook on life.

LUV (Sheldon Candis)
An all-star cast that includes Common, Charles S. Dutton, Michael Kenneth Williams, Dennis Haysbert, and Danny Glover drives this Baltimore-set drama about a man who, just released from prison and trying to start a new life for himself, takes an interest in teaching his 11-year-old nephew how to be a man.

OSLO, AUGUST 31st (Joachim Trier)
From the director of the spectacular REPRISE (2006) comes this poetic and deeply moving account about a recovering addict on his first day leave from a recovery program. As he reconnects with old friends and family and fantasizes about a clean life on the outside, will he fall prey to his old demons? Reverently based on the same novel that inspired the Louis Malle classic THE FIRE WITHIN.

THE PATRON SAINTS  (Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky)
This extraordinary documentary gives us a poignant look into the daily lives of residents of a home for the aged and disabled. Incapable or unwilling to self-censor, they say whatever is on their minds, giving us unforgettable access to a phase of human life we may have never before looked at head-on.

PILGRIM SONG (Martha Stephens)
In this atmospheric, sensory-rich mix of comedy and drama, a downsized middle-school teacher in a struggling relationship sets off alone for a hike on the Sheltowee Trace Trail, meeting a cast of characters worthy of Kaurismaki or Jarmusch along the way.

THE SOURCE  (Jodi Wille and Maria Demopoulos)
This is the ultimate documentary about The Source Family, a spiritual group that formed in L.A. during the height of the psychedelic era. Central to their story is their Sunset Strip restaurant The Source, their albums and performances as Yahowa 13, and, above all, Father Yod, a former Marine and jujitsu expert who reinvented himself first as a vegetarian restaurateur and then as a spiritual guru.

WILD IN THE STREETS (Peter Baxter)
Since medieval times, the UK town of Ashbourne has played an annual, multi-day game that divides the town into two groups, the Up’ards and Down’ards, each hellbent on carrying a beautiful handmade four-pound ball to one of two goals three miles apart. This riveting documentary captures the tradition in all its sweat and glory.
